How to verify a contractor before work starts
- Ask for the license number and the exact registered name it is held under.
- Check that name against the company on the estimate, the invoice and the vehicle.
- Check the status is current, not expired, suspended or revoked.
- Ask for a certificate of insurance issued to your address, not a policy number read out on a call.
- For gas, sewer, water-heater or repiping work, ask which permit is being pulled and by whom.
Which plumbing code applies
2021 International Plumbing Code and 2021 International Residential Code, adopted by Utah Code 15A-2-103 and published as the 2021 Utah State Plumbing Code Utah adopts the 2021 International Plumbing Code and the 2021 International Residential Code by statute at Utah Code 15A-2-103, published as the 2021 Utah State Plumbing Code, and it is one of the few states that writes statewide amendments directly into the statute book. Utah Code 15A-3 Part 3 holds the statewide amendments to the IPC, including 15A-3-305 amending IPC Chapter 5 on water heaters, while locally adopted amendments are collected at 15A-4 Part 3.
Permits
Permits are issued locally by the city building division, or by the county in unincorporated areas, even though both the license and the code behind the work are state-level.
Complaints
A Utah plumber is verified through the DOPL license lookup, and DOPL is the state body that handles complaints about licensed plumbers and unlicensed practice; because the individual plumber license and the plumbing contractor license are separate credentials, both are worth checking for a company.
PlumberUtah is not a licensed contractor
PlumberUtah is an independently operated referral service. PlumberUtah is not a plumbing contractor, holds no contractor license, employs no plumbers and performs no plumbing work. Every job arranged through this site is performed by an independent, separately licensed professional who contracts directly with the homeowner.
Consumer protection
Utah operates the Residence Lien Recovery Fund as a protection for homeowners in disputes involving construction liens.
